Ngwerere at a glance

Ngwerere is a prominent area on the outskirts of Lusaka. The area has seen immense growth over the past few years and continues to rise. This is one of Lusaka's fast-emerging markets.

New developments continue to spring up on what were once farmlands. These developments have made way for better service delivery, empowering the communities that live in the area.

Although farmlands are being used for residential and commercial properties, the area is still big on commercial farming. Ngwerere is known for its poultry, beef, dairy, and maize farms.

History of the area

According to the locals, the area gets its name from the Ngwerere stream. It is now mainly used for irrigation purposes by most of the farms in the area. The stream flows towards the Chongwe River which leads to the Chongwe Dam.

In August 2020, Standard Microgrid installed a mini-grid in the rural areas of Ngwerere. It has proudly equipped 150 homes and businesses with electricity. This has led to the introduction of new shops and businesses in the area.

Climate

As part of Lusaka, Ngwerere's residents also experience a warm and temperate climate. October is the best time to get into those bathing suits and relax at the pool. These are the area's hottest summer days. The coldest winter month in Ngwerere is experienced in July.

Ngwerere experiences its least amount of rainfall in August. The most rainfall occurs here in January, with an average of 250 mm.

Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)

The Kenneth Kaunda International Airport is approximately 22.5 km away from Ngwerere. This journey will take approximately 26 minutes via the Ngwerere Road. Lusaka's CBD is approximately 10 km away from the area.

Schools in the area

With the excellent new tar roads now in place, it is relatively easy to access the Tiny Toes preschool, LICS international school, and the British international primary school (BIPS).

Hospitals nearby

Medlands, Coptic, Victoria hospital, and CFB are straight runs in from Ngwerere. The Levy Mwanawasa hospital is excellent for COVID patients.

Shopping malls

There are many shopping complexes and locally owned businesses in Ngwerere to get your goods from. Waterfalls Shoprite centre, Garden City Pick and Pay centre and the Novare mall on the Great North road.

The East Park Mall is a further 20-minute drive. Here you can get your groceries, clothing, and even catch the latest movie. You can shop at Toys R Us, Food Lovers Market, Colour Cafe, Pick n Pay, Shoprite, and a variety of local stores and restaurants.

Restaurants

Within the Ngwerere area itself, you also have the Protea Hotel adjacent to Bonanza golf course where you have several restaurants to choose from - not forgetting the tastefully Done Pub and Grill. For light lunches and fun days out you have Kalimba Reptile Farm. You also have R and G Papajoes for pub meals and fund days out.

If you fancy a lunchtime treat or dinner overlooking picturesque sunset views, then a trip to the Clubhouse at the Bonanza Golf Course is in order. They have added fresh wood-oven cooked pizzas to their versatile menu ideal for any occasion. Be sure to keep an eye out for their themed nights featuring a new cuisine each month.

Special attractions

Nestling in the lush basin of the Ngwerere stream, the Kalimba Reptile Park is a fantastic place for a family day out. The venue is a popular attraction offering lots of 'scaly' sites and activities, such as fishing. The reptile park is an extension of Kalimba Farms which specialises primarily in crocodile farming.

If you're big on wildlife then Chaminuka Estates situated in the area is where you can have great lunches, game drives, see elephants and other game and walk with the Cheetah.

Opening in August, the entertainment centre at the Protea Hotel is where we will see great shows coming up from South Africa.
